on this post we will have again a closer look to the face. a face like a canvas with ink and animation filling, giving expressions, emotions and colour.

a video directed by David Wilson, using stop frame. electric, simple pop giving sound to something that you can not miss. we have a band, we have a great video.

2 Björk | Hidden Place

video of the 1st single from Vespertine, this Hidden Place, according to the directors pretends to show a popstar without make up, in a big close up, with liquids representing looping ideas, in a hypnotizing way. theories apart, retina like it.

musical short: the thin line

today, retina will follow another format, but still with plenty good images and great music. to change I'm proposing 2 short-films where music is "queen". is there so much difference between a film and a music video? the idea is to share ideas... no matter wich kind of art. good for the ear and for the retina.

1 Nuit Blanche | Arev Manoukian (director)

chemestry between strangers. those strange moments that we all live, at least once in a lifetime, when the world stops. when life can take another course if we have the impulse.

2 En Tus Brazos | FX Goby, E. Jouret e M. Landour (directors)

an animated short film from France that brings life to tango from Argentina. something different in retina. it is worth it.

retina teasing… to let go the animal in us… literally.

1 Massive Attack | Butterfly Caught

single for the 4th fullalbum of this band (in the heart of retina). a very interesting approach. is it a free adaptation of Kafka's Metamorphosis (?)

2 Björk | Hunter

the face (the bright and dark of transformation)

retina returns with 2 videos, despite they present the face transformation as a common theme, they're very different in fact. one, more dark other brighter, not only from a footage prespective but also for the music. just take your conclusions…

1 Grace Jones | Corporate Cannibal

single for the mithical jamaican girl Grace Jones, known by her music and fashion connection. a very original video giving colour for a dark song (great voice). a tread for retina.

2 BPA ft. Emmy The Great | Seattle

something different. lighter. however a face that keeps continuously changing just like the previous video. the music is gave by BPA this super mega project having Norman Cook as mentor. (Mr. Fat Boy Slim)

waiting for your suggestions, i really would like to ear from you a suggestion of a video in line with Grace Jones video. strange but with a face keeping on changing.

Kris Moyes: geometry and raw materials

hi there,

retina is back with a slight restyled look e proposes today the "director's sample" format. we'll visit the work of Kris Moyes, a young director, responsible for videos of Franz Ferdinand, Cut Copy, Sia, The Presets and Beck. rich images, elaborated, mathematic and full of texture… here i show 2 videos but i propose you to make a more deep research of the work. retina recommends.

1 The Presets | My People

one of the The Preset's videos directed by Kris. even for those, that don't like that much electronic music, my advise is to watch the video. it is worth it. repetition taken to the limit, in an infinite mirror? maybe. above all visual art with a very very interesting result.

2 Beck | Youthless

one of the Modern guilt's singles from a retina habitué, mr. Beck. a mr. Beck characterized as a miscellaneous of puppets builded with a lot of materials and textures to give the song some colour. to see it with a smile.

paralell realities: space / time

hi there,

in the retina's videos today, we can see two different realities. curious is the fact that the videos themselves, artists and music occupy two "places" also very different in the music scene.

to see: to see:

1 - Radiohead - "All I Need"

an "intervention" video giving an image to this beautiful song by Radiohead. produced by MTV for the EXIT campaign, the video shows two realities that, althoug common in time, are completely paralell in space…

2 - Lauryn Hill- "Doo Wop"

in this case the parallel reality is only temporal. however the party is timeless. from Lauryn hill a R&B/Soul promise, where is she? a music that is somehow parallel to the retina, but still a cool tune ... to begin to say goodbye to summer ... (not to be swept away by reality in the video freeze ... the true reality is parallel).

who is who

hi there,

after a short break for holidays retina comes back full of energy to continue its work.

we have 2 great videos, both with a hidden character. with this lack of identity we can assume ourselves the character and let ourselves be taken by the eloquence of sounds (pretty much poetic :)

to see:

1 - LCD Soundsystem - "Someone Great"

one single from one of the most beloved bands by retina. the story of someone who doesn't see? someone who do not want to be seen? a ghost? gives a feeling of loneliness somehow.. but to retina it looks very well… full of colour

2 - Caribou - "Melody Day"

great theme from mr. Caribou (Daniel Victor Snaith, actually). unlike the previous video, in this video the "hidden" charactersno, want to change the world and the world is a gear and we all want to conquer, and we do it. and we want to go further and we do it. a day with melody helps retina to do it :)
